Sensual Rhythms
Originating in Angola and with Portuguese influences, Kizomba music is a melange of African rhythms and electronic percussion, complimenting a sensual and rhythmic partner dance perfect for both beginner and experienced dancers. To dance Kizomba is a unique experience – partners come together in a sensual undulating movement, where leading and being led finds a new dimension.
Originating in Angola in the 1980s, the term Kizomba derives from the Angolan word "Kimbundo" meaning "party". Kizomba as we know it today is an amalgamation of various genres of music and dance steps, adapted to create a unique style. It is impossible to explore Kizomba without discovering the traditional dances that preceded and influenced it: Semba (the predecessor of Samba), Zouk (from the islands Antilles), Coladeira (from Cape Verde), and even Tango and Merengue.
Listening to traditional music such as Semba and Zouk, the younger generation in Angola felt that something was missing - a modern romantic touch. The result was the composition of a slower and very sensual rhythm: Kizomba as we know today. Explosive and contagious, Kizomba is a dance that seduces your soul.
